My photography journey began when the company that I worked for, awarded me for 25 years of service with some vouchers to spend. One of the gifts I chose was a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera and kit lens.
Sadly, it did end up spending more time in the cupboard than it did around my neck.
However, one day I was walking our dog by the river and a flash of blue sped past me at an alarming speed. I thought to myself that might just have been a Kingfisher.
It got me thinking and I set myself a challenge, I want to photograph a Kingfisher.
I began my journey with the camera now around my neck instead of being in the cupboard and it had a huge impact on me.
The Kingfisher was elusive as always but the challenge led me to seeing and photographing many other birds. My inquisitive nature then led me to finding out the names of the birds I was photographing, and learning about their habits. I joined the RSPB and made visits to places like WWT Slimbridge, also joining them as a member too.
My quest for knowledge increased more and more, I attended some photography lessons locally. One at the Nature Discovery Centre near Newbury where I live.
I learnt the basics of the camera and even told the tutor that my aim was to photograph the Kingfisher. He wished me well and asked to send him a photo when I succeeded.
I visited many places looking for a Kingfisher, waited by rivers, researched where I may find them.
My challenge was eventually completed and fate played a huge part to this, and the photo was taken literally on my doorstep. Kingfishers nested on the river behind our house and I was lucky enough to capture some images. The majority to start with were just blue blurs and the odd splash with a blurry blue image!!!
But as you can see from the photos in my gallery, my wish came true and my challenge completed, the rest as they say is history!
I hope you enjoy a few of the images I have taken of the Kingfisher.
(Ps I do have a new challenge - to capture the perfect Kingfisher Dive)
Thanks for reading.
